Blast of to Button Moon

It has been 36 years since Mr Spoon and the Spoon family (Mrs Spoon, Tina and Eggbert), have taken their spaceship off to Button Moon.
Each week in the 1980’s, an eager audience watched as the Spoon family spaceship (made from a Heinz baked bean tin), flew through blanket sky to reach their friends, and enjoy adventures, on Button Moon. All while singing the theme tune, cleverly composed by the legendary actor Peter Davidson.
No wonder then that ITV has chosen to add all 91 episodes of the Button Moon series to their ITVX streaming platform. Waiting audiences will be able to enjoy the full series, in their original format, as part of the Retro Kids section of the streaming service, from the 27th June 2024.
But for creator and puppeteer Ian Allen, the Button Moon legacy has never been far away. He still has many of the original sets and puppets from the TV series and theatre shows, at his home/theatre in Norfolk. They are part of a larger collection of puppets and props owned by The Button Moon Trust, which is a charity Ian established in 2015. Since then he has spent his time running the trust, which helps disadvantaged children and raises money for animal welfare charities.
Asked how he felt about the renewed interest in the series, Ian said, “The show has been a part of so many people’s childhoods and they truly love the characters…I hope this launch will introduce a new generation of children to Mr Spoon, and help us to support more children’s charities.”
With recycling and conservation more important than ever before, our heroes of recycling, the Spoon Family, may well be enjoying many more trips to Button Moon.
